Luis Caparrós Promises Solution to Illegal Builds in Almanzora

Meetings have recently taken place to discuss the illegal build situation in the Almanzora Valley area. The participants included, Luis Caparrós, a delegate from the Housing and Territorial Planing Committee (Vivienda y Ordenación del Territorio), José Ortiz, the director of the General Inspection committee, the Mayors of Albox, Albanchez, Arboleas, Cantoria, Lubrín and Partaloa and a representative from the AUAN (Abusos Urbanísticos del Almanzora No).

Delegates at meeting to discuss solution to illegal build in the Albox areaIt is hoped the General Inspection Plan of Andalusia (Plan de Inspección General de Andalucía), which is due to be approved in December 2008, will provide a solution to the majority of owners of around 6,000 dwellings that have been constructed illegally in the Almanzora Valley region.

An agreement in principal is said to have taken place between the various town hall's councils to approve municipal inspection plans (Planes Municipales de Inspección) This plan will make individual assessments of the illegally built houses. Caparrós is hopeful that a firm agreement between the Housing and Territorial Planing Committee and the various town hall councils will be ratified in December.

According to Caparrós, many dwellings that already have the necessary infrastructure and have been built in areas that are not considered protected will be able to be legalised. However, some owners may not be so lucky, and if their dwelling is considered uninhabitable, they could well find that they will be subject to demolition orders.

Caparrós maintained the Junta de Andalucía is obliged to work within the law. He stressed that the Junta will continue to encourage British nationals to live in the area, and that Spain is not a third world country.
